The studies presented in this thesis address the research questions about how complexity of languages varies and changes using novel methods and available data and respond to the methodological challenges associated with non-independence in cross-linguistic samples. The major contribution of the papers presented here is that they take advantage of the data and tools that became available with computational turn in linguistic typology and apply these to answer the long-standing questions about the language-internal and language-external factors shaping linguistic diversity, in particular in grammatical complexity.
