Mit seinen Beiträgen zielt das GMJ-DE auf die Repräsentation und Förderung von Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft im deutschsprachigen Raum (Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz) sowie auf deren internationale Anschlussfähigkeit. GMJ-German Edition is affiliated with the University of Erfurt/Germany and hosted by Carola Richter and Christine Horz. GMJ-DE is published semi-annually (spring and fall) and bilingually (English and German). It is dedicated to research the fields of communication and media studies, with the ambition to represent communication and media theories, report empirical and analytical research, present critical discourses, apply theories to case studies, and set out innovative research methodologies. It aims to advance research and understanding of communication and media in the German-spoken countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and around the globe. Theore tically, we rely on the transnational alternative digital public sphere and hashtag activism to understand how social media acted as a meeting place for mobilization and building cross bounda- ry pollination and unitary movements. This investigation relied o n a combination of virtual ethnog- raphy and purposive sampling as methodological approaches. Thematic analysis was the analytical tool employed with four themes informing this investigation: democratisation and human rights, transnational solidarity, states ’ response to hashtag movements and use of parody accounts as a counter hegemonic strategy.
