Interaction of Light and Matter in Metal-Semiconductor Hybrid Nanostructures

Ultra-fast nano-optics may provide the next seminal breakthrough in information processing. It studies the behavior of light in nano-structured materials on femtosecond timescales. Such knowledge is the groundwork of future all-optical integrated circuits that can perform data-processing tasks at much higher speed than contemporary electronics. An important topic in nano-optics are nano-structured metal interfaces. At such interfaces, so called surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be excited. They are collective excitations of electrons in the metal and the light field. SPPs confine light below the diffraction limit and travel along the metal interface. Consequently, they are suitable as information carriers in nano-optical devices. Another important ingredient are (organic or inorganic) semiconductors. Semiconductors allow for the light-light and light-matter interaction that is needed to control light at the nano-scale. They act as the active devices that switch or amplify the signal. The present theoretical work discusses calculations that were inspired by results from experimental co-workers. It describes the modeling process, discusses the choice of computational tools and the post-processing that is necessary to obtain meaningful results in computational electrodynamics. The results are then compared to the experiment. In its first part, the present work discusses subtle aspects of the excitation of SPPs on metal-gratings on which the symmetry of the grating is broken by the individual scatterers. The topic of the second part is a metal-grating that is covered with an organic dye. In this system, SPPs and excitons in the dye form collective modes called excimons or plexcitons. This effect can clearly be seen in an avoided crossing of the SPP and excitonic features in the far-field reflectivity. In the last part, the localization of light in arrays of zinc oxide nano-needles is discussed. The needles are randomly placed on a substrate but vertically aligned. Because of their look, they are often called nano-forests. Light in the nano-forest is multiply scattered at the needles and it turns out that a portion of the light becomes localized - it is trapped in the nano-forest.
