In this thesis, the mechanism of formation of structured hard chromium coatings is investigated. Because of their adjustable tribological properties, those coatings are of interest for technical applications. They develop during direct current electrodeposition from electrolytes containing chromium(VI)-oxide, sulphuric acid and methanesulfonic acid and possess well-defined areas distinguished by their optical appearance and coating thickness.Firstly, the current state of research on chemical behaviour of the electrolyte components and on chromium deposition from hexavalent electrolytes is comprehensively presented, analysed and evaluated. From this it is derived as a working hypothesis that a locally differing inhibition of the cathode surface, caused by cathodic films formed during electro reduction, could be the reason for surface structuring. In the experimental part, the electrolyte system is investigated in regard to current density, deposition time, temperature and electrolyte composition, the influence of surface topography of the substrate as well as correlations between optical appearance and other properties of the coatings. The solubility and composition of cathodic films are investigated. Electrolytes are characterized by means of current density-potential scans and galvanostatic experiments. Important findings are:* The surface area of the individual regions of the coating is linearly dependent on mean current density. In contrast, the deposition rate of the coating areas depends on a respective local current density. From this the existence of a discontinuous current density distribution on the surface is derived. * Chromic acid and sulphuric acid are antagonists of methanesulfonic acid during formation of the structured surface. The latter causes the formation of surface structures. Frequently, its presence leads to the formation of cathodic films of low solubility. * The type of cathodic film and the appearance of the coating are strongly correlated. Chromium deposition takes place between the cathode surface and the cathodic film. The state of the surface causing the coating appearance adapts to changes in plating conditions during electrodeposition.* Cathodic films are most likely based on polymeric chromium(III)-hydroxo complexes, with chromate, sulphate and water as additional ligands.* Sulphuric acid and methanesulfonic acid influence the shape of the current density potential curve independently from each other. The formation of a thick cathodic film can be assigned to a certain region of the curve of methanesulfonic acid containing electrolytes. * In galvanostatic experiments a surface structure is visible after few seconds. After approximately one minute, a stationary state is reached. The findings support the hypothesis of locally different inhibition of the cathode surface. A hypothesis on formation of structured chromium deposition in the electrolyte system chromic acid-sulphuric acid-methanesulfonic acid is derived.
